Operation Clean Sweep
One of the challenges causing growing public concern is the increasing quantities of plastic waste ending up in the oceans and generating significant economic and environmental damage. Even though plastic waste entering the oceans from Europe represents a small proportion of global marine litter, we have committed ourselves to the best practices by taking the first step for ensuring that plastic materials, which pass through our facilities, are handled carefully, and do not end up in the streams, waterways and oceans.
At the Holstebro factory in Denmark, we initiated an internal campaign called the ‘Operation Clean Sweep’. The campaign’s goals is to help every plastic resin handling operation implement good housekeeping and pellet containment practices to work towards achieving zero pellet loss.
With the involvement of our facility department, we reviewed our factory to identify the locations where plastic pellet loss occurs. Consequently, the material supply area by the outdoor silos was upgraded with powerful filters and top grates at outdoor drainage systems. The filters collect raw material and are monitored and cleaned systematically. The next step in this activity is to find out how we can prevent pellet loss earlier in the process.
Consequently, we are heading to work with the Operation Clean Sweep by implementing the five basic steps, and by this, enhancing maturity level of own operations.
These steps are:
1. Commit to making zero pellet loss a priority.
2. Assess company’s situation and needs.
3. Make needed upgrades in facilities and equipment as appropriate.
4. Raise employee awareness and create accountability.
5. Follow up and enforce procedures.
Being Operation Clean Sweep partner in Denmark, in 2018, we will promote the ‘Operation Clean Sweep’ across all our factories with a target to implement this campaign by the end of 2018.
